A non-lethal on-rails shooter!
After E3 2014, Video Game Legend Shigeru Miyamoto lamented the amount of violent games. Coincidentally, lightgun shooters were starting to become rare and that's where Inti Creates comes in with a unique solution! Gal*Gun is an On-Rails shooter that fires pheromones at girls that only knocks them out.
Gal Gun Double Peace, the On-Rail shooter, is actually an indirect sequel to Gal Gun, which released on the Xbox 360 and afterwards on the PS3 in 2011 in Japan. This was also one of the games, which made use of the relatively newly released Playstation Move in 2011 fitting the genre. Surprisingly the developer is Inti Creates and is rather known for their Mega Man Zero games. Unlike the games predecessor the indirect sequel actually made it to the west and even the real sequel Gal Gun 2 is making its way here on April 13th.
Love in a day or despair forever
A cupid in training called Ekoro is in process of her graduation test and her mission is to help the main character to find the love of is life. As it always happens, nothing goes according to plan in life. A devil appeared ready to create some mischief. This diverted Ekoros attention and made her shoot a 32 times stronger bullet. The result: Every single girl falls in love with him at sight. But this isn’t without it’s fair share of problems. Due to the stronger effect he only has one day time to successfully hook up with his love otherwise the opposite will happen and everybody will ignore him in the future.
The story is presented in a Visual Novel style and offers some choices that affects the way the story develops.
Sadly the Gameplay part does not offer subtitles, thus one can only guess what all the characters are saying when not privy to Japanese language.
At the beginning of the game you also need to choose the type of character you want to start as. The stats affect the type of choices you can make. The stats are not fixed though and can be changed by either the Doki-Doki attack depending on the opponents and the Shop.
The game offers two difficulties, multiple story branches, Score attack and a Gallery with the option to change all the girls specific attires.
Gameplay & Controls
As already mentioned the game is based on the On-Rail shooter genre. This means you only have to control the crosshair and occasionally the direction by using the D-Pad. All enemies have a weak point that can be found by just going over them with the crosshair. When you go over the correct spot you will see Japanese signs popping up.
Aside from the basic shots you can charge up for one with splash damage. There is also a zoom/xray button helping you shoot behind obstacles.
Aside from the normal bullets. You can charge up your shot and inflict splash damage. There is also the aforementioned Doki-Doki attack, which is a super attack that depletes the built Doki-Doki gauge filled up by successfully downing the opponents.
At the end of the Map you get scored in 3 disciplines: Life, accuracy and speed. The better you score the better are the rewards and faster you rank up.
There are also some side-missions available that can be done while going through the level. Those can be found at the level select screen by pushing R1, presented as messages on the smartphone.
There are also another gameplay segment reserved for key moments of the story progress, which also utilizes the touch pad.
The controls can be changed and the crosshair has 5 different speeds.
Graphics & Sound
It’s easy to see that it’s a multiplatform game with a PSVita version. Therefore, it’s easy to say that the graphics don’t really require the power of the PS4.
It also can’t be said that music is it’s forte, because the main gameplay only has a single track. It’s not bad, but it certainly serves just as background music.
Verdict
Gal Gun Double Peace strength lies in it’s comedic story, simplicity and probably some lewdness (?). Though unlike other On-Rail shooters it offers a little bit more story and content due to the different story paths.
While the theme doesn’t fit everybody. There is certainly something entertainment to be found for those who look for something light and easy to play.
